Thomas was the son of Mr & Mrs A Phillips of 41 Chapel Street, Dawley and had a sister Mrs F Roberts living at 51, Portley Road.

He was killed in action on 16th August 1917 during 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele) and his body is buried at Poelcapelle British Cemetery in Grave LI.E.16.

This cemetery also contains the grave of supposedly the youngest British soldier to die during the First war, Private Condon aged 14 of the Royal Irish regiment.
